A–Z Guide: How a South African Worker Can Join the H-2A or H-2B Program:

A - Assess Eligibility You must be:

  • At least 18 years old

  • Physically fit for manual work

  • Willing to return to South Africa after the contract

  • Free of serious criminal convictions

💡 Important: You do not apply directly to the U.S. government for H-2A/H-2B. A U.S. employer must select you first.

B - Build a Simple, Honest CV/Resume

Your CV/Resume should be 1–4 pages, clear, and truthful and Include:

  • Full name (as per passport)

  • Contact number & email

  • Work experience (farm, construction, hospitality, cleaning, landscaping, etc.)

  • Physical skills (lifting, machinery, long hours)

  • References (if available)

No fake experience — U.S. employers verify.

C - Choose the Right Program

  • H-2A → Farm & agricultural work (often no visa fee)

  • H-2B → Seasonal non-farm work (hotels, resorts, landscaping, seafood)

  • Both are temporary, legal, and employer-sponsored.

D - Get a Valid Passport

  • Apply at Department of Home Affairs.

  • Passport must be valid at least 6–12 months

  • Processing time: ±2–8 weeks

  • Cost: ~R600 (standard SA passport)

E - Expect NO Recruitment Fees

⚠️ Warning:

  • It is illegal for anyone to charge you:

  • To “sell” you an H-2A or H-2B job

  • To “guarantee” a visa

  • If someone asks for big upfront money → walk away.

F - Find Legitimate Recruiters or      Employers

Safe options include:

  • Licensed South African recruitment agencies

  • Direct U.S. employers

  • Reputable international labour companies

  • Always ask:

  • Who is the U.S. employer?

  • Which state?

  • Contract length?

  • Written job offer?

G - Get Selected by a U.S. Employer

This is the most important step.
                       The employer:

  • Chooses you

  • Files paperwork with U.S. government

  • Sends you a job offer / approval notice

  • Without this → no visa possible!

H - Housing Explained

  • H-2A: Employer provides free housing

  • H-2B: Housing may be provided or deducted from wages

  • Never assume, always confirm in writing.

I - Interview (If Required)

Some employers interview via:

  • WhatsApp

  • Zoom

  • Phone call

  • They check:

  • Experience

  • Attitude

  • Willingness to work hard

J - Job Contract Review

Before you accept, confirm:

  • Wage per hour

  • Work hours

  • Overtime (if any)

  • Transport & housing

  • Contract start & end dates

K - Keep Documents Safe

You’ll need:

  • Passport

  • Job offer

  • Employer approval documents

  • CV/Resume

  • Police clearance (sometimes)

  • Keep copies and originals.

L - Legal Costs (What You Pay vs Don’t Pay)

Usually YOU pay:

  • Passport

  • Police clearance (±R150–R200)

  • Medical exam (if required)

  • Visa application fee (H-2B only)

  • Usually EMPLOYER pays:

  • Most government filings

  • H-2A visa fee

  • Often transport (or reimbursed)

M - Medical Examination

  • Sometimes required by the embassy.

  • Must be done at an approved clinic.

  • Cost varies (~R1,500–R3,000).

N - No Overstaying

If you overstay:

  • You may be banned from the U.S.

  • You lose future H-2 opportunities

  • Always return on time.

O - Orientation & Expectations

Expect:

  • Long hours

  • Physical work

  • Rules & supervision

  • Drug & alcohol policies

  • This is work, not tourism.

P - Police Clearance

  • Required in many cases.

  • Apply through SAPS.

  • Processing time: ±1–3 weeks.

Q - Question Anything That Sounds Wrong

Red flags:

  • “Pay now, job guaranteed”

  • “No contract needed”

  • “We fix visas without employer”

  • “Use a tourist visa to work”

  • These are scams.

R - Receive Embassy Appointment

Once approved, you’ll attend a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy South Africa.

Bring:

  • Passport

  • Job documents

  • DS-160 confirmation

  • Payment receipt (if applicable)

S - Start Work in the U.S.

After approval:

  • Travel to the U.S.

  • Work only for that employer

  • Follow contract rules

T - Transport Costs

  • Often paid upfront by worker

  • Many employers reimburse after arrival or mid-contract

  • Get this in writing.

U - Understand Your Rights

You are entitled to:

  • The wage in your contract

  • Safe working conditions

  • Housing (H-2A)

  • Fair treatment

  • You are not illegal.

V - Visa Approval

If approved:

  • Visa stamped in passport

  • You can travel only during contract dates

W - Work Hard, Build a Reputation

Good workers are:

  • Invited back next season

  • Recommended to other employers

  • Given longer contracts

X - X-Factor: Honesty

Honesty keeps you:

  • Legal

  • Safe

  • Re-hirable

  • Lies get you banned.

Y - Your Total Estimated Costs (Worker Side)

Approximate:

  • Passport: R600

  • Police clearance: R150–R200

  • Medical: R1,500–R3,000

  • Visa fee (H-2B): ±US$205

  • Travel (if not prepaid): varies

💡 H-2A is usually cheaper for workers than H-2B.

Z - Zero Shortcuts

  • There is no fast, secret, or guaranteed way.

  • The legal path works — scams don’t.
